Our story

Built for Black Fathers. Rooted in Truth.

The Academy of Black Fathers was born from a simple conviction: Black fathers are not a problem to be solved. They are a power to be activated. This platform exists to give every Black father the tools, community, and guidance he deserves.

Black fathers and children together

Mission

Why we exist.

Our mission is to equip, connect, and empower Black fathers through culturally competent guidance, evidence-based curriculum, and a brotherhood built on accountability and love.

Vision

A world where every Black child grows up knowing their father.

We envision a generation of Black fathers who are present, healed, and leading — not despite the systems that tried to break them, but because of the community that refused to let them fall.

What we stand for

Our guiding principles.

01

Presence Over Perfection

We don't demand perfect fathers. We build present ones. Showing up — imperfectly, consistently — is the foundation of everything. Parenting is cultural and a private affair that we must learn is sacred.

02

Cultural Competence

Our guidance is built for the specific realities Black fathers navigate — systemic barriers, generational trauma, and the unique strength of Black family culture.

03

Brotherhood as Infrastructure

Isolation is the enemy of growth. We build community as a core feature, not an afterthought — because fathers grow faster together. We want to learn and face our parenting challenges together, for the betterment of each other and the betterment of our children.

04

Healing as Fatherhood

You cannot pour from an empty vessel. We treat a father's own healing as inseparable from his ability to show up for his children.

I didn't build this for the fathers who are struggling. I built it for every Black father who is already showing up — and deserves a world that shows up for him.

Why we're different

This isn't another program. It's a movement.

Most fatherhood programs were not built with Black fathers in mind. They apply generic frameworks to a community with a specific history, specific strengths, and specific needs. We moved away from that chase. The Academy is different — built from the ground up by people who understand the journey, powered by knowledge that speaks our language, and grounded in a brotherhood that holds you accountable with love for each other and our children.

Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Atlanta, GAEst. Boston, MA — 1994

Antonio Celester is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Academy of African American Fathers, which he established in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1994. A visionary leader and passionate advocate for family equity, Antonio created the Academy to build a transformative space where Black fathers can access vital resources, dismantle systemic barriers, and share their stories.

Antonio's path to leadership is rooted in lived experience. The eldest of five children, he stepped into a caretaking role early in life following his parents' divorce when he was just 11 years old — helping his mother raise his younger brothers. His father, Lawrence I. Celester Sr., transformed his own life from the streets to become a respected Boston Homicide Detective, a legacy of redemption that shaped Antonio's conviction that every man can change. Under his leadership, the Academy serves as a cornerstone for community resilience — providing critical life skills, self-actualization tools, and navigation support through complex legal and social landscapes. Antonio resides and works in the Atlanta area, continuing a lifelong dedication to redefining the narrative around Black fatherhood.

As Black men and as Black fathers, we should be seeking a redemption of our social, emotional and moral obedience. As Black men, we rely way too much on conformity. In other words, we chase "social acceptance", rather than establishing a social order, under our own authority!
